Ashcroft, BC

The town might be small, but the attractions in Ashcroft promise big relaxation for those looking for a quiet getaway from the bustle of city life. Walk leisurely through the newly opened Heritage Park, past the retired train caboose, and become mesmerized by the perpetual turning of the water wheel as it lifts and pours the water from the meandering brook that runs through the park. Then have tea at Ashcroft Manor and Tea House, one of the town's many heritage sites. For a list of all of Ashcroft's historic sites, dating as far back as the late 1880s, pick up the walking tour brochure at the local museum.

For the outdoor adventurer, Ashcroft offers plenty of options. The nearby Thompson River fills with trophy Steelhead each fall, while fossil beds northeast of town provide hours of fascination. Crack open the ordinary-looking rocks to reveal 40 million-year-old plant, fish, and insect fossils within, or retreat on horseback to the rolling hills of the Highland Valley. Whether you stop for an hour or stay for a week, Ashcroft promises a restful visit.
